An introspective space with an abundance of natural light.
The Chapel has a visual connection to the existing campus that was the driving force behind the design. In an effort to connect the new chapel to the existing campus, Grace Hebert Curtis sited chapel on axis with the existing chapel located across a ravine. In order to further strengthen the connection of old and new, the chapel is surrounded by an administration building, two residence halls, and a wood deck, all of which frame the axis back to the existing chapel.
The solid mass and strong lines of the exterior serve as a backdrop for the 100 year-old live oak trees in the adjacent exterior space known as the ‘Cathedral’. Up lighting the skylight and accenting the windows with soft lighting brings the mass to life as nightfall approaches.
