Nested to Chapman University’s existing School of Music building (Bertea Hall), Oliphant Hall houses a 2,400 square foot Instrumental Rehearsal Hall as well as administrative spaces, practice rooms, faculty studios and support spaces.
The various site constraints required the design team to maximize the use of the limited area given for the project. The new building connects to the existing music building on two floors. Careful coordination was required between the architect and the acoustical consultant due to the limited wall thickness and room adjacencies. The proximity of so many acoustically sensitive spaces to each other presented us with many challenges, trying to keep each room quiet from the next. Multiple methods were used including box-in-box construction, room isolation and structural mass. The result is a compact building in which faculty and students can use the entire facility with minimal sound disruption. This project was in association with AC Martin Partners.
